Ask the Family to Chip In
You’re working all week, and you spend your weekends taking your parents to stores, helping them put away the items they buy, and preparing their meals for the week. You’ve had no time for yourself all weekend, and you have laundry and housework waiting for you at your house.
It’s time to talk to other family members. If they’re not chipping in, they need to. Even family members who live in different states can help by ordering groceries online for delivery, paying bills online, or arranging to have your parents visit them every few months. While your parents are away, you’ll get a break.
Plan Regular Days Off
Many family caregivers balance full-time or part-time jobs with their parents’ care needs. If that describes your situation, you need to stop and ask yourself when you last took a day off. If it’s been months or years, it’s time to change.
You need a day or two each week where you have the day to yourself. You don’t have to cook meals for others, clean the house, or run errands. Go out with friends, stay in bed until you’re ready to get up, or curl up with a book and ignore everything.
Take a Vacation
Sometimes, it helps to get away. Book a mountain cabin, bring some books or items for your favorite hobby and disconnect for a long weekend. If you love to fish, bring a fishing pole and spend your time fishing. If you enjoy photography, bring your camera.
The mountain may not appeal to you. That’s fine. Pick the location that’s soothing and appeals to you. It could be a beach getaway, a vacation in a big city, or an island retreat. Whatever makes you feel at peace is most important.
Home Care: Bring In Outside Help
It’s time to consider outside help like home care. If you’re burning out and close friends and family can’t take over some of your duties, a professional caregiver is an excellent option. They come when needed to do everything from preparing meals to completing housekeeping tasks.
Call a personal care home agency. Learn more about the services available for your mom or dad. You don’t have to stop being the family caregiver, but you need to plan days off to take care of yourself. Personal care at home is easy to schedule and will improve your well-being.
